Logistics

Consmin transports its ore by road from its mine sites at Woodie Woodie and Coobina, to the export port of Port Hedland, the largest bulk port in Australia.

The ore is transported in quad or triple road train combinations carrying up to 110 tonnes per load to Port Hedland (a distance of approximately 400kms from Woodie Woodie and 550kms from Coobina) from whence it is exported to customers in China, Asia, Eastern Europe and the USA. During 2009, a total of approximately 1.2 million tonnes of product was transported to Port Hedland by road. Consmin utilises a contracted fleet of road vehicles.

Consmin currently exports through Berth1 in Port Hedland but, by the end of 2010, the loading operations will move to the new bulk export terminal at Utah Point. Shipment sizes currently vary from approximately 55,000 tonnes to 80,000 tonnes, loading at an average rate of approximately 16,000 tonnes per day at Berth1. The move to Utah Point should enable larger ships to be loaded at rates of between 80,000 and 100,000 tonnes per day.

Logistics staff from the Consolidated Minerals offices in Port Hedland manage the trucking and ship loading operations.
